The master and his emissary criticism5/31/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() This side is happier with the familiar, seeks to narrow things down to certainty, is less self-critical, sees things in isolation as discrete or fragmentary entities, always aiming for fixity and stasis. The left-hand (LH) side of the brain (which operates through the right-hand side of the body) apprehends the world, with a view to manipulating it, focusing on detail, the local, the foreground. That had been known since the middle of the 19th century, but only recently has it become clear that the two hemispheres have different characteristics. IAIN MCGILCHRIST’S The Matter with Things is a sequel to his previous volume The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World (2009), in which he argued powerfully for the crucial importance of the notion that human beings, along with virtually all sentient creatures, have a brain split into two hemispheres, physically linked by a narrow corridor, the corpus callosum, across which there is only limited contact. ![]()

![]() I had AHA moments that turned into PSYCHE moments multiple times throughout. The mystery aspect of the book, for me, was so strong. Ladies of the Secret Circus has such a intriguing historical, mystery plot that was captivating and head-turning from beginning to end. Constance did a wonderful job with both characters. Now Cecile is that weak, fragile leading lady but has a wonderful character progression throughout the book. ![]() Our second character is Cecile Cabot, who we do not spend that much time with. It is so refreshing to read a female character in her style because often times I feel like authors, male and female, create the weak-minded type. ![]() She is not whiney, she is not naive, she is actually intelligent and strong. Our first is Lara Barnes who is our primary focus for the majority of the book. The plot of this book splits between two time lines and through those two characters. Be known though you may read either book without having read the other. ![]() The Ladies of the Secret Circus is the second book by Constance Sayers and while not a sequel to A Witch in Time, both books take place in the same world and have parallels. ![]() Everything about this book was magical, whimsical, mysterious, and demonic. ![]()

Compared to his cluttered and busy office, his home looked as though he hardly spent any time there. A rich leather couch and matching chairs decorated the living roomtasteful, functional, necessary.
