Bitter Root, Vol. 1 by David F. Walker6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() See search resultsfor this author David F. Walker page Find all the books, read about the author and more. Walker weaves the two threads together well, and manages to eat his cake and have it too-both Ernest Tidyman’s original Shaft and Walker’s exist in the same universe, simultaneously poking fun at and honoring the character’s legacy. 1: Family Business Kindle Edition by David F. The book is more consistent when focusing on its second plot line, which finds Shaft caught up in a cartoonish moviemaking scheme that inevitably goes south. ![]() ![]() Walker (81) Kindle Edition 13. 2: Rage & Redemption (211) Kindle Edition 15.99 3 Bitter Root Vol. The contrast between the book’s aesthetic and Walker’s script couldn’t be more apparent, as Shaft follows up a violent rescue mission by searching for a missing gay teenager and (slowly, quietly) confronting his own homophobia. Walker (518) Kindle Edition 10.99 2 Bitter Root Vol. But they make a puzzling choice: Walker’s last Shaft tale was illustrated with brutality and heavy detail by Bilquis Evely and Daniela Miwa, but the new team creates a surprisingly soft, rounded-off vision. Walker (Shaft: A Complicated Man) returns to his favored brand of blaxploitation with a new artistic team, including Smith (Revolutionary War: Dark Angel) and colorist Alex Guimaraes (Vampirella: The Red Room). ![]()

I Remember You by Yrsa Sigurdardottir6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Though incidents in the Hesteyri thread become a little static and repetitive compared to the complicated fact-sifting Ísafjördur thread, the author draws both strands of her story together for an unpredictable finale that blends the best aspects of the tale of mystery and the tale of the supernatural. Delving into the past, Freyr finds a string of bizarre deaths that claimed the schoolboy’s classmates in adulthood. ![]() ![]() Sunday Telegraph Genuinely bone-chilling, and proves that as well as being the queen of Iceland crime fiction, Sigurdardottir is a supreme generator of fear. I REMEMBER YOU is a truly creepy combination of haunted house story and modern detection in Iceland. In the second, psychiatrist Freyr and police detective Dagný investigate the vandalizing of a grade school in Ísafjördur and uncover clues that recall a similar incident at the school 60 years before that occurred shortly after the unsolved disappearance of one of its pupils. The Times Yrsa Sigurdardottir's chillers get better and better. In the first, a trio of travelers to the isolated Westfjords village of Hesteyri are thwarted in their efforts to renovate a home they have purchased by a dangerously mischievous spectral child. Amelie zhao blood heir6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() (With a ridiculously exciting cliffhanger.) But here’s hoping we don’t make the same mistake with her follow-up, Song of Silver, Flame Like NIght, an immersive doorstopper of a fantasy opener that spins a dense, intriguing story of rebellion, hope, and self-discovery. The odds are fairly decent that a lot of readers slept on author Amelie Wen Zhao’s debut Blood Heir trilogy-the first book in the series was delayed following a storm of pre-release criticism and vitriolic Twitter feuding, the second by the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, and the whole thing was sort of eventually overshadowed by a much larger (and necessary) industry debate about representation in teen fiction and the supposed perils of cancel culture. ![]()
